A thick lotion that reduces itching and soothes irritated skin in areas such as the mane and tail. Apply from early Spring through to Autumn by gentle rubbing with fingers or a soft cloth.  If used as a preventative measure in early Spring prior to the skin irritation symptoms becoming evident and may stop the condition taking hold.

For best results use in combination with Gallop® Medicated Shampoo

Application

Apply to all areas affected by itching by rubbing in with fingers or soft cloth as soon as fly season starts. Initial application of 75ml should be made twice daily, reducing to once a day as irritation reduces. Perform patch test 24 hours prior to full application. Do not apply to broken skin. All affected areas should be kept clean by shampooing and rinsing with Gallop® Medicated Shampoo at least once a week. After shampooing or heavy exercise, re-apply to ensure adequate protection.

  • Recurring seasonal itching is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to the saliva of biting midges.

    When a midge bites:

    • Saliva enters the skin
    • The horse’s immune system reacts
    • This triggers inflammation and itching

Some horses are more sensitive, meaning their immune response is stronger and does not self-regulate – leading to more intense and persistent itching.

  • The itching isn’t only caused by the bite itself, but by the immune response that follows.

    After a bite:

    • Inflammatory chemicals are released in the skin
    • Blood flow increases to the area

This causes itching to continue even after the midge is no longer present.

  • Repeated bites can lead to:

    • Increasing skin sensitivity
    • Stronger inflammatory responses
    • Reduced tolerance to further bites

Without effective management, this creates a cycle of itching, rubbing, and skin damage, making symptoms appear worse as the season progresses.

  • Fewer bites mean fewer immune reactions.

    • Soothes skin already affected
    • Helps calm irritated, itchy skin
    • Supports comfort where inflammation is present
    • Aids relief once rubbing or irritation has begun

This means Killitch can be used both preventatively and as part of ongoing management.

    • Cleanse and refresh the skin
    • Soothe irritated areas
    • Prepare the skin for reapplication of Killitch

    This leads to:

    • More comfortable horses
    • Less visible skin damage
